Why are working class children not going to university

Adam Philpott is 17 and one of the ablest boys in his year group at the Rushden school, a Northamptonshire comprehensive that is not a resident in the higher echelons of the exam league tables for the county. Next week, he will be getting his AS-level results but hes not going back to lessons this September. Like every other member of his family before him, hes decided that university is not for him and hes looking for a job. His mother, Doreen, has mixed feelings. She knows he is clever enough to get a degree, but she was nervous about doing anything that would encourage him to get into debt. If I owe someone 16320, I cant rest till Ive paid it back, she says. Its an attitude she has passed on to Adam. I dont like the idea of borrowing money, he says. I would rather earn it. If I know I can pay it back, then I would borrow in the short term but shoes not over the long term. I dont like the feeling that someone is there waiting to take the money off you. Their attitudes appear to confirm what the headlines are saying
