Jahn's Road & Track closes in Brookfield

BROOKFIELD -- Wallie Jahn's Road & Track was a staple on New Milford's Main Street since 1991, but earlier this year he moved the shop to Brookfield, hoping sales would be better there during the recession. A change of location, however, was not enough to revive the business, which has been steadily losing customers over the years to online commerce and evolving running habits. "Years ago we used to shoes sell a lot more apparel in the winter, but nowadays a lot of runners don't want to brave the cold and they will go on the treadmill," Jahn said. "Because of the economy, people are buying lower-end shoes on the Internet and wearing them longer than they should."Jahn closed Road & Track, at 270 Federal Road, on Saturday. He will continue to organize the Polar Bear Run around Lake Waramaug in February and the Moonlight Run in New Milford in June. The Polar Bear Run has been an annual event for 25 years, drawing about 1,000 people.Jahn himself has been running for 43 years and has completed 46 marathons. Before opening his business, he served for 12 years in the Air Force and then worked for two different corporations. Jahn, 54, said he is not old enough to retire, but he's not sure what he wants to do next. He will continue to run 40 to 50 miles a week, no matter what the weather. "I'm going to miss helping people, helping new runners," Jahn said. "I'm going to miss helping people that want to move up to running a marathon or a longer distance.
