Love of deals inspires boutique

Whether it's books, clothing, CDs or accessories, for as long as Marisol Haynes can remember, she said she's always liked getting a good deal.About 18 months ago, when she found a Sigrid Olsen suit worth more than $100 at a consignment store in Rocky Hill and paid only $5 for it, Haynes said she realized she would enjoy running a consignment store.Marisol's Consignment Boutique, which recently opened at 152 Greenwood Ave. in Bethel, is next door to The Gift Cottage. The 550-square-foot shop was formerly part of the office of attorney Daniel O'Grady.The boutique sells gently used women's and junior's dressy and casual clothing ranging from petite to plus sizes. The store also features costume jewelry, handbags, shoes, belts, CDs, DVDs, small home decor, and gifts.Prices range from $8 to $30. Brands include Chico's, Gap, Banana Republic, Talbots and J.Crew. There is also shoes Aeropostale, Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch and Forever 21. Handbags runs from $8 to $30, jewelry from $6 to $30, and coats from $20 to $60.The boutique also sells unopened products such as beauty supplies and woolen scarves."I've always wanted to open a consignment store. It's smarter shopping at any time, not just because of the economy. I love the feeling I get when I find a great deal on something, and I know others do as well," said Haynes, 38, of Newtown."I get a lot of personalized attention here," said Bethel resident Terry Zapata, who has purchased clothes for herself and her daughter, and a brown Coach purse to give as a gift. "I can tell Marisol exactly what I'm looking for, and she will be able to let me know right away if she carries it. This isn't true of larger stores. If she doesn't have the item, she will keep my name on a list and call me if it comes in."Everything is in excellent condition," Zapata added.Some clothing tips from Haynes include, "when cleaning an item, be sure to follow label directions. Also, if you haven't worn something in about a year, it's time to get rid of it."Before opening the store, Haynes was an aesthetician, offering skin care, waxing, makeup application and eyelash extension services.Once a month, Marisol's Consignment will host a "Girl's Night Out," where women can bring their friends and get discounted beauty services such as eyebrow waxing and chair massages, as well as additional clothing discounts."I love the small-town feel of Bethel," said Haynes, who moved from Cromwell 18 months ago. "It's a walking town and you see a lot of the same people around."Marisol's Consignment is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; Thursday from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. People interested in selling items should call first.
